Kilimanjaro · choosing the route

Lemosho or Northern Circuit: choosing a Kilimanjaro route

A short route does not become a better one because the camp is more expensive. For a private group the choice starts with acclimatisation, with health, and with the lead guide’s right to stop the climb.

01

Lemosho 8

A balanced line with gradual altitude gain and a full private team. Current market guidance runs at roughly USD 3,100–3,950 per guest depending on group size.

It suits people who want a strong standard route without shortening the acclimatisation to reach an advertised price.

02

Northern Circuit 9

The longer, quieter northern line with an extra day built in. Market guidance is roughly USD 3,450–4,500 per guest.

The additional day does not guarantee the summit, but it gives acclimatisation a more sensible shape and the trail is markedly less crowded.

03

What goes into an exact quotation

The price depends on dates, group size, the chosen route, the composition of the mountain crew, camp equipment, meals, park fees, transfers and the nights before and after the climb.

Before any payment we name the licensed operator, the full list of inclusions and exclusions, the cancellation terms and what happens if someone has to leave the route.

04

Insurance and safety

Personal insurance must explicitly cover the altitude of the chosen route, medical evacuation and repatriation. On the operator we check guide qualifications, the crew’s working conditions, medical checks, emergency oxygen, equipment and the rescue procedure.

No document replaces the lead guide’s judgement on a person’s condition, the weather and safety. The summit cannot be guaranteed, and an operator who guarantees it is telling you something about themselves.

05

The ocean afterwards, and why not the next day

The natural sequel to a climb is a week that asks nothing of you. The Seychelles work well for exactly that reason — but not immediately. A full recovery day after the descent is a condition rather than a comfort: altitude leaves the body slowly, and boarding a yacht the same day removes any margin for how you actually feel.

In practice the combined route runs 17 to 21 days: the mountain, a genuine day down, the flight, and only then the water. How the two halves are joined — baggage, the buffer night, what happens when a bush flight slips — is set out in the guide on combining Tanzania and the Seychelles.

Common questions

Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?
Both are longer than the short routes and give a gentler altitude profile — that much is solid. We will not compare routes by success percentages, though: the park publishes no route statistics, and the one operator who disclosed its sample size found the Northern Circuit worse than Lemosho, not better. Short routes cost less but gain altitude faster.
What are the Kilimanjaro park fees?
Entry to Kilimanjaro National Park is USD 70 per person per day all year round, and the rescue fee is USD 20 per person per trip. Lemosho and the Northern Circuit are camping routes, so instead of a hut fee you pay a camping fee of USD 50 per person per night. The USD 60 hut fee exists only on Marangu. All rates are quoted before 18% VAT: with it, entry comes to 82.60, camping to 59.00 and the rescue fee to 23.60. On an eight-day Lemosho the park fees add up to about USD 1,100 per guest; on a nine-day Northern Circuit, about 1,240.
How long does the climb take?
The practical minimum for acceptable acclimatisation is seven days on the mountain. Eight and nine days raise the chance of reaching the summit noticeably.
Can we go to the Seychelles straight after the descent?
Not on the same day. Plan a full recovery day, then the flight. The combined Kilimanjaro and ocean route usually runs 17 to 21 days.
